As human beings, we give ourselves all kinds of monikers to describe what we do, how we act, or what is important to others that we do for them. In a small way, we glorify ourselves with titles to designate our importance to society. President, General, Chairman of the Board. When I gained rank in the service I went from a lowly deckhand to the leader of our small division under only the officer for our segment aboard ship. I accepted both the title and the responsibility and did my job well enough to get asked to reenlist after two tours of Vietnam. I declined because I had the superstition that the third time is the charm. I survived the first two when others did not and the third did not seem a great idea.
All these years later I wonder at my silliness but, knowing I am not alone in this, I also wonder about the silliness of titles, deserved or otherwise.
I didn’t come to this pass by myself. I got here from reading the bible and in no way am I laughing at titles. It takes work and diligence to move up in the service and more or less the same dedication of self in civilian life. The difference is that most civilians are not taught how to kill and be rewarded for doing so. Killing is the difference and that is why I turned to the bible to find out where I stood in God’s eyes.
This is where and when I learned of forgiveness and forgiveness is much needed now in our society where some political minions think they have all the answers when the truth is we have few answers and those we have are perverted over time. God has all the answers. We do not. So, approach your search for God with humility, not your rank among humans. Don’t be silly in front of God.
